One of the more controversial changes in Firefox 4 was to remove the RSS Icon from the “Awesombar” that showed up when feeds were present on the page. Sure, there’s a toolbar icon, but it’s always there, whether or not a feed is on the page you’re viewing. To restore the functionality, try this Firefox extension: RSS Icon In Awesombar.

If you’re using Google Chrome, they didn’t include that functionality by default but did release an extension for those of us who wanted it. You’ll want to grab this: RSS Subscription Extension by Google.

RSS is an awesome technology, but it looks like the growth of the social network as an internet hub has left it by the wayside for better or worse.
